Insert Special Characters to Your Document by Using Alt key Codes or the Word Symbols Library

Posted by Sam

You will find many special characters such as tiny icons, accent marks and many more in just a few clicks. To do so, you need to press the Alt key and a number code so you can type a special character that you would like to type in Microsoft Word. Often you will be typing such characters or symbols like currency symbols, linguistic characters, copyright symbols, and even tiny graphics like smiley faces. So here you will find out how it works.

Any numeric, alphabetic or special character in all text-based programs has a numeric character code named ASCII, such a code that also used in Microsoft Word, Excel, and many well-known programs. Generally the code can be used to open text files in most of the software programs and it is why the passwords in a number of programs and software are case-sensitive, for example, you can get the uppercase ‘B’ by using ASCII number 66 and get the lowercase ‘b’ by using ASCII number 98. So, by using an easy combination keystroke (Alt + the number code on the numeric keypad), you can type these symbols or characters. But, don’t use the numbers keypads at the top of your keyboard, they do not work. In case your keyboard doesn’t have numeric keypad, you can use the Symbols Library.
Using Symbols Library to Insert Symbols

The most common alternative to insert special characters in to a text-base program like Microsoft Word is by using the Symbols Library. How to insert symbols or special characters by using Symbol Library in Word is easy:
  1. At the Quick Access Toolbar Select the Insert tab
  2. Then Click the Symbols button
  3. After that you will see only 20 frequently used symbols to choose, but for more choice, click More Symbols button.
In Word program at the symbols list will be shown the last 20 symbols inserted as a speed dial to access special characters or symbols. This feature will helpful for you if you use a number of symbols frequently. But, in case you need more than 20 trademark and copyright symbols in a single work or you need to insert them in almost all paragraphs, whether you want it or not you have to insert them by using ASCII codes.

Take into account that Word also provides the Character Code from the ASCII Decimal table and there you will see the name of the special character or symbol and the tips under the special characters dialog window on how you will insert them to your document by using Alt+ key shortcut key.

For frequently of usage that very often, it is recommended to use the ASCII Codes instead.

It is much faster to type Alt+0153 (the trademark symbol) than by searching for it and take it from the Symbols library, particularly when you need to insert it 50 times a day.

You fill find a lot of websites in the Internet which are sharing the ASCII and symbol tables. The last website I have visited is ascii-code.com. But, take into account that you need to press and hold the Alt key and then type a 0 (zero) and then followed by the code of the symbols or special characters.

Tablet and Laptop Keyboards

Commonly some tablets and laptops don’t provide numeric keypads. In this issue, generally you need to use the Number Lock that might be on some of the inside keyboard keys, hand out with other keys. A number of devices also support a system that provides Fn button as the function key. You can press the Fn button which to activate the Alt+ key codes on your keyboard.

To open a calculator-type keypad, you can press Fn + the F11 key. But for some devices are maybe not working. One alternative is by toggling on both the Scroll Lock and Number Lock keys, and then use the Alt+ the key code. If still not working, the last way is by pressing down the Fn button and hold, and then followed by pressing and hold the Alt key, after that you can enter the code and release Fn, Alt and the number keys at the same time.

The conclusion is you could be easier to use the menus in case your tablet or laptop doesn’t provide numeric keypad. It is quicker it’s and more efficient instead of accessing the Insert menu.
